Three thousand miles from where Happy, Dopey and Doc line the walls of the Walt Disney Company’s Burbank studios, the animator Bill Plympton keeps an office in one of those south-of-Midtown Manhattan buildings full of anonymous-looking steel gray doors.

Behind them could be anything from vacuum cleaner dealerships to international drug cartels. But who cares? Clearly, more fantastic things are erupting down the hall at Mr. Plympton’s: Alien marriages. Nose hairs as long as the Nile. Dogs that dream of fire hydrants. And cinema created by pencil.

He cries a lot: over his stepfather’s supposed abuse; the loss of his brother to cancer and his dogs to old age; the failure of his marriage to the actress Carré Otis. He admits he destroyed his own career, because, as he puts it: “I was arrogant. . . . I wasn’t smart enough or educated enough” to deal with stardom. We’re hoping that the academy doesn’t screw up and NOT give a golden boy for the brilliant performance put by the late Heath Ledger. I saw the film when it came out and again later to make sure my enthusiasm for the film didn’t taint my view of his performance.

Both times, I walked out thinking…dude is kinda scary. That was enough for me. Sorry Jack, but the performance by Heath really was quite insane and left the earlier versions of Joker (save the original cause he was kinda creepy too..) in the dust.

Filmmakers & visual artists from all over the New York City are invited to screen their short films, motion graphics, music videos at SCENEPR’s Love Actually.

This a must event for both filmmakers looking to promote their works as well as those people needing to valuable filmmaking advice.

Discussion: 8:30-9:00pm (longer as time permits)

Director J.J. Abrams continued the worldwide roll-out of his new Star Trek prequel Wednesday, showing four extended preview clips to a capacity crowd of stars, executives, press, crew, studio employees and their various entourages at the Paramount Pictures studio theater.

After showing the same clips to similar gatherings in Europe and New York, Abrams faced a mixed reaction from the media and those Trekkers lucky enough to crash the viewing parties. But Wednesday’s presentation attracted a friendlier group, as Trek was returning to its home dry dock for an event that had the back lot buzzing.
