Sarah Palin: future media star?

As campaign managers for Sarah Palin plot last-minute tactics to get her elected, Hollywood bigwigs are convening strategy sessions of their own. Their goal: finding the ideal on-air vehicle for the vp candidate if and when she exits politics.

Love her or hate her — there doesn’t seem to be much middle ground with Palin — the 44-year-old hockey mom has captured the public imagination in a way no politician has since, well, Barack Obama.

But as more and more polls cast doubt on the McCain-Palin ticket, producers and agents across the entertainment world are discussing possibilities for capitalizing on her fame, ranging from an Oprah-style syndicated talk show to a Sean Hannity-like perch in cable news or on radio.

Goodbye, BitTorrent. Hello, Streaming.

Comcast’s decision to cap monthy broadband usage at 250GB is being decried as the end of the Internet as we know it. Maybe so, but it can also be seen as the dawn of the Streaming Era. As the Olympics drew to a close with big numbers - 75.5 million streams (NBCOlympics.com), 40 million (BBC), another 130 million from the European Broadcasting Union, and 100 million Chinese viewers - the networks were already moving…

The technology and journalism fields have long been dominated by men, especially in the upper management of big companies. But the J-Lab and McCormick Foundation want to shine the light on new ideas from women who work at mainstream media outlets but want to start something up on the side.

That’s why they started giving out grants in their New Media Women Entrepreneurs (NMWE) competition, with three winning ideas getting $10,000 in seed money:

> Echo, a locative media project that encourages people to call in their stories about places in Atlanta

> Latina Voices, a website for Latinas to discuss social issues

> Northwest Navy News, a site that will facilitate connections between military families in Washington state

Jan Schaffer, executive director of the J-Lab, told me that women are…

Fear of Preroll Ads Eases [AdAge]

New Study Helps Dispel Belief That Online Video Viewers Will Surf Away

– The perils of preroll appear to have been vastly overstated, according to Nate Elliott, research director at Jupiter, who suggests audience loss as a direct result of prerolls could be as little as 5%.

The figure comes as Jupiter releases a major European report about online video and in-stream video advertising.

Online video and ads surging
The research firm found Europeans are watching double the amount of online TV than they were a year ago, and that online video advertising is keeping pace with the trend. It is expected to account for…

Why Google will put ads on its home page [CNet]

I have only just managed to get my severe involuntary chuckling fits under control.

They began on August 14th when I read these words from Google’s Eric Schmidt, in response to a question from CNBC’s somewhat comatose Jim Kramer as to whether the company would consider placing ads on its home page:

“People wouldn’t like it. We prioritize the end user over the advertiser.”

And I prioritize the ketchup over the fries. I eat it raw and unsullied, guzzling it straight from the bottle as if it were cabernet.

I’m astonished that anyone would have even the smallest flicker or twitter of doubt that, one day, Google will slap ads from the highest bidder on its home page.
