Based on the true events of the deadly gas attacks perpetrated by members of the Aum Shinrikyo cult on the Tokyo subway system, CANARY tells the moving story of two children, each abandoned by their families, who come together in the wake of the scarring event.

Twelve-year-old Koichi has grown up within the confines of a religious cult whose violently instilled dogma has all but destroyed his sense of identity. After a murderous attack, the cult disbands and Koichi finds himself abandoned by his mother and forcibly separated from his sister. To reunite his broken family, Koichi breaks out of the child welfare system and sets off to Tokyo. While on the run, he meets Yuki, a girl desperate to flee from her abusive father.

Koichi and Yuki travel together in search of his sister, facing the inevitable troubles of children making their way in the world without the guidance or protection of adults. The separate scars of their pasts cause friction between the two, but their struggles develop a familial bond that allows them to confront both their pasts and the future ahead.

Beautiful and poignant, Akihiko Shiota’s film illustrates the resiliency of forgotten youth in forging their own destiny from a tragic past.

CANARY is written and directed by the award winning director Akihiko Shiota, and stars Hoshi Ishida and Mitsuki Tanimura. Hoshi Ishida won the Sponichi Grand Prize New Talent Award for his role at the 2006 Mainichi Film Awards.

Networking Tip #1: Ask Open Ended Questions

Since so many people come to this site to sign up for our networking shindigs, I thought it would only be appropriate that we provide some useful notes and advice on how to become a more effective networker, not just for our event, but in any arena you happen to be in.

As entrepreneurs & professionals, we spent an inordinate amount of time talking, but…do we really know that the message we’re sending is being received properly?

One way to know is to get to know the person…but I’ll tell you now…if you aren’t already practicing the art of the Open Ended question, then you aren’t even getting 10% of the information you should be getting. Read more »

A-Rod…What the F%&k are you doing man….

The question isn’t whether or not A-Rod is sleeping with Madonna or spying on his wife. The REAL questions is: Are Yankee Fans more angry at the lazy season the Yankees are having or at A-Rod for subjecting NYC to DAY after DAY photos of her Kaballahighness?

An now just when things couldn’t get any weirder for both A-Rod and Yankee fans, rumors of Barry “Hand me the Air Pump” Bonds surfacing in Left Field and photos of A-Rod with Madges best friend surface…

Sounds like a perfect time to change the channel and see what the Mets are doing…

Point-Counterpoint: Should You See ‘The Dark Knight’ in Imax? [NYMag]

Point-Counterpoint: Should You See ‘The Dark Knight’ in Imax?Courtesy of Warner BrothersWith opening-weekend Imax showings of The Dark Knight already selling out in many cities, is it worth waiting a couple of days — or waking up at four in the morning — to pay extra money and see Batman on the biggest of big screens? Or should you just see it in a regular theater, since after all, only twenty minutes of the movie are shot in Imax anyway? We asked New York’s Logan Hill, who saw the movie in Imax, to debate Dan Kois, who saw it on a standard screen.
